Product Details

An L.L.Bean exclusive for three decades and counting, our classic river driver's shirt has an innovative duofold construction that effectively traps and holds warmth.

  • Roomy, nonbinding fit, cut long to stay tucked in.
  • Traditional Fit: Relaxed through the chest, sleeve and waist.

We named this shirt after the Northern Maine log drivers who made their living in tough conditions - because we designed it to work just as hard. Exclusively knit for us in Nova Scotia, our legendary two-layer Henley features a chill-stopping dual-layer construction - so cold and wet stay out and warmth stays in. We love how it's tough on the outside, and soft on the inside.

  • Woven just for us in Canada by Stanfield's, a 160-year-old family company.
  • Inside layer is made of soft, absorbent cotton.
  • As a duofold construction (the cotton and wool are knitted together), it will shrink in the dryer.
  • Outer layer is 50% cotton/40% merino wool/10% nylon.
  • Machine wash, dry flat.
  • Rib-knit cuffs with Lycra® elastane.
  • Durable, quick drying wool blend outer layer keeps cold at bay.
  • Traditional two-button placket.
  • Thermal construction traps air between the layers to retain warmth and helps layers hold shape.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Warm, but not soft inside These are certainly useful shirts, unlike any we’ve had before with the dual materials. While I appreciate the warmth of the wool, I have to say these shirts do not live up to their reputation of yesteryear. They aren’t the same shirt that’s been described by long time Bean fans. The wool is somewhat lesser quality than expected, and the cotton is definitely not what I’d call soft. As with quite a few former classic Bean products, the classics do not live on as before. Not a fan of executive decisions made to move the company forward, unfortunately by leaving behind the highest quality it once stood for…the difference in plushness & quality of fabrics is undeniable. It’s a good shirt, but not great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Feels good This shirt is a lighter weight than the River Driver Shirt I had years ago but is still a good shirt for this time of year.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Please make these for women again!!! LL Bean used to make these shirts, as well as long johns, for women as well as men. I still have one of these amazing shirts from the 80s or 90s. It is hands down the best layer for cold camping nights. I was so disappointed when LL Bean stopped making these in a women's cut and sizing. LL Bean, PLEASE bring these shirts back for women.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not what it used to be I started buying these in the late seventies. It was a 3-button, taffeta lined placket. It was so cottony soft inside and wooly on the outside with a clear separation of the wool and cotton layering. More recently it has gotten much less defined between a soft cotton inside and a warm wooly feel outside (all thought they keep saying that). Infact, it's noticeably scratchy inside now and has been for years; with no well-defined difference in the fabric layering anymore. I'm 74 and have bought many over the decades. The last several have NOT been the soft cotton inside and nice wooly outside that they were years ago. If you just don't like or have reactions to scratchy wool, really, don't buy them. It's the scratchiest merino wool I've worn. I won't buy them or gift them anymore.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Little Too Warm Indoors Returned. Too hot for indoor activity -for ME-. 'Outdoor activity'... it would probably be fine. Beautiful color, excellent quality. Went back for the waffle knit henley in same color.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Shirt Very nice shirt. Comfortable. Thought it might be warmer, but this was for my husband who is always cold. That was his opinion. But overall he likes it.
