Product Details

An L.L.Bean exclusive for three decades and counting, our classic river driver's shirt has an innovative duofold construction that effectively traps and holds warmth.

  • Roomy, nonbinding fit, cut long to stay tucked in.
  • Traditional Fit: Relaxed through the chest, sleeve and waist.

We named this shirt after the Northern Maine log drivers who made their living in tough conditions - because we designed it to work just as hard. Exclusively knit for us in Nova Scotia, our legendary two-layer Henley features a chill-stopping dual-layer construction - so cold and wet stay out and warmth stays in. We love how it's tough on the outside, and soft on the inside.

  • As a duofold construction (the cotton and wool are knitted together), it will shrink in the dryer.
  • Inside layer is made of soft, absorbent cotton.
  • Outer layer is 50% cotton/40% merino wool/10% nylon.
  • Woven just for us in Canada by Stanfield's, a 160-year-old family company.
  • Machine wash, dry flat.
  • Durable, quick drying wool blend outer layer keeps cold at bay.
  • Traditional two-button placket.
  • Rib-knit cuffs with Lycra® elastane.
  • Thermal construction traps air between the layers to retain warmth and helps layers hold shape.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Been buying these since approximately 1975. Great base layer. The tall size also makes great sleep shirt whether You are in, tent, cabin or a house! When you sit on a ski lodge bench or a frozen log the tall makes the warm difference. My girlfriend wears hers as if it was a dress. Warm and cozy in and outdoors!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Cold Weather Shirt Love these shirts. They are comfortable and warm without being bulky. They are also durable: I still wear one that is almost 20 years old.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lady's first I have loved wearing "duofold" river driver henleys since the 1980s. Bean used to make them in pretty colors that a woman might enjoy more. I wore one with a pretty flower print and a few pink ones in the winter to my electrical construction job. I worked so hard in all weather, and these kept me toasty in the winter. I work hard, but I still enjoy pretty things and do not enjoy looking so much like a man. The reddish color is nice, but I don't like that Bean seems to care less about women in their products and styling anymore. We like to be warm and comfy, too! My pink and flowered ones just went into the trash last week because after wearing them consistently every winter for 4 decades, the finally wore out. What's up, Bean? Please make more pretty functional clothes that are not clownish or frumpy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Where are the women's equivalent?! Great shirt, gave them as gifts. But honestly - why is there no equivalent for women? We like big cozy Henleys, too. My tall woman friend loves hers, but it would be a dress on me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A practical and handsome shirt My son runs so warm, he seldom prepares for drops in temperature. This shirt is great because you get the warmth of wool, but don’t feel it against your skin. He finally tried it on a cold winter day, and enjoyed its comfort and insulation. I would size up, as many will be tempted to toss in the dryer for a few minutes, since it takes so long to dry flat. Be cautious, as it will quickly shrink, pucker, and lose its form…you will be sad. Besides, if it’s ever too large, you have room for a layer underneath. It’s a casual, yet handsome shirt, provided you properly care for and have patience with the drying process.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Shirt, but bring back Two Tone. I really do love these, and keep coming back. They are warm, almost sweaters. Great for layer. But I really want the two tone back. Mine is wearing out. Maybe by the time I need to get a new one....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from since the 1970'S I have bought and used the river driver shirt since approximately 1975! The tall size is great because it does not pull out. Also, it makes a great cold weather sleep shirt for all!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bring back women’s sizes!!! Years ago, these shirts were made in women’s sizes and they fit perfectly. I am still wearing my original one. I bought a men’s medium but it just does not fit the same as the women’s sizes did.
