Holds more than other nominally 24L and 30L packs
Great for travelers, especially on budget carriers, it fits in the "personal item" sizing boxes at the ticket counters and gates. As with my 24l "Original School Pack", non-expanding version, this has a roomy, fairly rectangular single main compartment that "crushes" the upper corners of my large packing cubes much less than a traditional "teardrop shaped" day pack. It's also very light compared to many other daypacks, thanks to intelligent minimalist design - no wasteful inner linings. Still manages to include an office panel inside the patch pocket, a nice touch left out of many modern day packs.
I have mixed feelings about the expansion panel. If you need it from time to time, YOU NEED IT. Problem is the zipper is exposed to some wear when zipped closed, and much more abrasion when opened. LLBean is famous for durability, so I'm sure they've allowed for the wear and tear on the especially vulnerable bottom (when expanded). Adult users who travel on budget air carriers are of course much less likely to rough-house the bag than elementary students etc.
In terms of volume, this matches my 30L packs when NOT expanded. Don't ask me how. ASTM testing methods for volume DO allow makers to include exterior accessory pockets and even bottle pockets in their measurements, which cuts into main compartment space. However I've seen other packs consistently fail vlog tests using packaging peanuts and verified containers to measure. (none of them test LLBean school packs because apparently they are not bourgie enough)
So I think either Bean is very generously understating bag volume, or very honestly reporting it. Just keep in mind that even unexpanded this feels more like a 26L-28L or even more pack from another company. Since it holds more than you'd think, for personal item use on strict airlines, TAPE or RULER MEASURE your PACKED dimensions.
I've never has a seam unravel or a fabric panel have a serious wear spot in decades of LLBean bag use; no zipper failures, and while the water repellent coating only goes so far in a heavy rain, I've never had more than a little moisture intrude. Hooray for modern minimalism with modern tough materials (and Bean's Kodra nylon is MUCH tougher than polyester).
Thank you LLBean for the current black colorway. I forced my wife to suffer very childlike, brigher colors - royal blue and solar - back when you didn't offer black except on the Deluxe model.

Perfect backpack for travel!
This is just what I need for trips. I carry it on flights along with my small suitcase and don’t need to check any bags. Because it expands, I can fill it easily whether carrying a little or a lot. And red is my favorite color!
