A great pack
Just wrapped up the Virginia whitetail season using the Ridge Runner Pro Hunting Pack, 30L through both public land muzzleloader and rifle seasons, comprising a total of about thirty days of scrambling up and down climbing and ladder tree stands and generally tromping around the national forest. The pack saw (light) rain and snow, and though obviously not waterproof, it held up admirably with the addition of a pack cover.
The Ridge Runner Pro is very thoughtfully designed for cold weather day-tripping or longer in favorable weather. Plenty of room for lots of layers, food, tools and all the necessary supplies for long days out in the field. The pockets are well designed, striking a nice balance between the desire to sort and organize and the ability to carry bulky items in the main section. The blaze orange flag looks like it could be used as a buttstock sock to lash a rifle to the back of the pack, but Bean doesn't market it as a feature and I didn't test it.
The suspension system, shoulder straps, hip belt and back panel all fit worked perfectly for me. There are compression straps in all the right places and I sometimes ride a bicycle to my stand over a couple of miles of gravel lumber roads and the pack always felt secure and well balanced. The back panel is particularly nicely ventilated, which helps mitigate the sweaty back inherent in long treks to the stand.
Note that with the side pockets full, the mesh water bottle side pockets are an extremely tight fit and from the look of the stretchy mesh material, I'm guessing they wouldn't last long with a big Nalgene bottle stuffed in there - probably better left for smaller things.
My last hunting pack lasted ten years. My first experience with the Ridge Runner Pro inclines me to think it will last just as long. I look forward to many days in the field testing that theory. Very pleased.
