Sweet Cast!
Love the way this rod casts. I like the way it loads and is so accurate. Already has me thinking about a second one in another weight...

This rod is well worth the money!
Love this rod for fishing small streamers and my nymphing rigs. At 9', it's also great for fishing dries on some of the larger rivers here in CT. Quality components, guides, and cork handle.

Great rod for me.
I love this rod the action is perfect for me. The only thing I see, it the reel seat doesn’t operate as smoothly as I’d like, but it works fine.

Apex 8 wt. fly rod
Cork not wrapped in plastic when new, which makes me think rod sold to me was not brand new. Some flaws in the finish of the rod. Overall, the apex is a pretty good fly rod, but $400 good is the question.

What if something is not as you Expected
The Fly Rod is great... However; to be honest I like to buying LL Bean products because of their customer service. If something is not as you expected they make it right. They are extremely knowledgable about their products and the sport.

LL Bean Apex Rod & Reel
I purchased the LL Bean Apex rod and reel with line and backing in a 9 foot 9 weight recently for targeting Striped Bass, Bonito, Bonefish and False Albacore. I was shopping for a lifetime, top of the line combination and called the Freeport store for advice. It was imperative that the choice cover all aspects of salt water applications. Prior to this purchase I tried all of the top of the line rods from several well known highly rated companies. Sage, Thomas & Thomas, and G Loomis just to name a few. But the price was too steep. The gentleman at the store in Freeport who was VERY polite and knowledgeable had most of these excellent brands in inventory. Including Hatch, Tibor, Nautilus and a few other brands of sealed drag saltwater bar stock reels, but the sticker price was way too steep for my wallet. He recommended his top of the line Apex Rod and Reel. I was rather hesitant until it arrived in the mail. When I opened the box and observed the contents, I was blown away by the quality! The cork grip and fighting butt were the best quality I have seen. The action in hand? Perfect. Now time for the ultimate test. I chose an estuary that was loaded with striped bass chowing down for their migration. The Apex rod is a canon! No problem casting an intermediate line 60-80 feet with a light double haul standing knee deep in the out going current with a stripping basket. Ok. Casts great but how well does it fish? The stripers were not huge but I was able to bring them all to hand in a hurry for a careful release. The Apex #4 reel operated flawlessly and balanced perfectly with the Apex nine weight fly rod. I highly recommend this outfit! Very light in hand but plenty of power in the lower section. It casts and fishes as well, if not better than many other brands and that all said and done, are three times the price of this rod, reel and top shelf fly line. I am a casting instructor for the LL Bean Outdoor Discovery Program in CT and will proudly showcase this outfit during instruction.
